04 // BIOLOGICAL CONTROL VECTORS
Biology already contains the most effective delivery systems ever engineered: viruses, bacteriophages, and spores. Cellular Foundry develops these as precision tools for gene delivery, sanitation, and environmental monitoring.
VIRAL GENE DELIVERY. Adeno-associated virus (AAV) serotypes 2, 8, and 9 — selected for tissue tropism and low immunogenicity — serve as the primary delivery chassis. AAV vectors carry payloads up to 4.7 kb, sufficient for single-gene CRISPR-Cas9 constructs. For larger payloads (multi-gene circuits, base editors), lentiviral vectors derived from HIV-1 with self-inactivating LTR architecture provide up to 8 kb capacity with stable genomic integration. Both systems are stripped of pathogenic function and replication-incompetent. This is standard gene therapy methodology applied to biomanufacturing.
BACTERIOPHAGE SANITATION. Engineered phages that target specific bacterial pathogens—Salmonella, E. Coli, Listeria—without affecting beneficial microbiota. A precision antimicrobial for food safety and bioprocess contamination control. Deployed in Matter Kitchen food preparation systems.
BIOSENSING MICROBES. Engineered microbial spores that detect specific environmental conditions—temperature excursions, chemical contaminants, pH shifts—and report via fluorescent or bioluminescent signal. Applications in bioprocess quality monitoring and environmental sensing.
